How to Heal as a Vampire in Dawnwalker

Refill empty Blood Reserve segments at night by feeding or using blood items. Closing Wounds regenerates the current segment; Blood Theft recovers recent damage. Match the missing health to the method below.

Choose recovery for the health you have lost

Blood Reserve is your segmented health in vampire form. Look at the shape and colour of the missing portion before waiting for a skill to refill it.

Match the missing health to the recovery method
  • Part of the current segment is missing

Closing Wounds. Regeneration stops when that segment is full.

    Plan Closing Wounds
  • Recently lost health appears grey

Attack with Blood Theft learned. The recovery window expires; later attacks do not restore every old wound.

    Plan Blood Theft
  • Other segments remain empty

Feed or use a blood restorative. You need a suitable target or a carried item.

  • Only one segment remains before dialogue

Restore Blood Reserve before talking. Blood Craving can make Coen drain the person he is speaking to.

Feed in combat or while exploring

In a fight, Voracious Bite uses an Activation Charge to feed on a suitable enemy. While exploring, enter Focus, select a target with an available feeding interaction and follow the bite prompt. Clear nearby threats first: an attack can interrupt feeding outside combat.

Some enemies are unsuitable targets, including large creatures such as bears and spectral enemies without blood. Bring portable blood before relying on feeding to carry you through one of those fights.

Feeding on deer and rabbits also adds Corruption progress. Animal feeding can restore health while avoiding a human victim, but it still contributes to Vampirism progression.

Voracious Bite’s listed restoration is 60%, 80%, 100% or 120% of one health segment at ranks 1–4, before other modifiers. Those values are portions of a segment, not percentages of your entire Blood Reserve.

Avoid entering conversations with one segment left

Blood Craving becomes a concern at one remaining vampiric health segment. Coen can lose control during dialogue and drain the other person, including a friendly character. Check the reserve before approaching a merchant or a quest conversation at night.

Use an available blood restorative before starting the interaction when your reserve is low. During the curfew introduced by Edict V, fewer people remain outdoors, so a supply carried in advance is especially useful.

Prepare blood quickslots before combat

Vial of Animal Blood and Vial of Human Blood can be used directly. Their listed restoration is measured against one health segment: an animal vial restores half a segment, while a human vial restores one segment. These are the base item amounts, not 50% and 100% of your entire Blood Reserve.

Both vials increase Corruption and also serve as crafting ingredients. Tainted Marrow, Kobold’s Blood and Murohn Blood are other restorative options. Check the specific item’s effect and your remaining stock after crafting.

  • Vial of Animal Blood

    50%

Half of one health segment. Also increases Corruption and can be used in crafting.

    100%

One complete health segment. Also increases Corruption and can be used in crafting.

    Human blood item
  1. Assign the blood item you intend to use to a quickslot before the fight.
  2. Confirm that at least one copy remains after any crafting or previous use.
  3. Use the quickslot when you need recovery without a bite target.

Story difficulty allows direct inventory drinking

On Story difficulty, the blood-drinking tutorial allows drinking directly from the inventory during combat. For other difficulties, arrange the quickslot beforehand. A restorative in your bag is less useful in an emergency if it is not assigned where you can use it.

Human-form healing preparations, such as Mending Ointment, have different use restrictions from vampire blood restoratives. Check the item’s allowed form when a healing option is unavailable.

Which recovery skills fit your fighting style?

Use regeneration for pauses between exchanges, Blood Theft for quick counterattacks and better feeding restoration when you regularly use Voracious Bite. The listed effects below use PC skill data from build 25129649.

If neither Endless Hunger nor Closing Wounds is learned, the first regeneration rank needs Endless Hunger 1 and Closing Wounds 1: two skill points and two training segments in total, with Corruption 3 for Closing Wounds. Mark any ranks you already know in the planner to see only the remaining cost.

Endless Hunger3 / 4 / 5 maximum health segmentsThese are total capacities at each rank. It leads to Closing Wounds.

Nourishing Blood10% / 20% / 40% more health restored by blood drinkingImproves feeding restoration; it does not supply passive regeneration.
Scarlet ShieldHealth restoration after blocksEquip it in the Active Abilities panel; ordinary blocks use a trigger chance.
Renounce Death10 seconds of immortality and attack lifesteal when you would dieOnce per combat; requires Corruption 15, 4 skill points and 2 learning segments.

Mandrake Ward has a nightly limit

Lacra’s mandrake reward grants Mandrake Ward, a separate safeguard against a fatal hit once per night. Renounce Death uses a once-per-combat limit instead. Keep those reset conditions in mind when preparing for several encounters in the same night.

Craft portable Blood Reserve infusions

Choose the infusion for the supplies and recovery you need. Animal Blood Infusion restores a small part of Blood Reserve, while Supernatural’s restores a large part; Mortal’s uses human blood as its blood ingredient. All three increase Corruption. Use the crafting recipe table for the exact ingredient quantities and carry limits.

Reduce the pressure on your Blood Reserve

A larger reserve, a lower ability health cost and stronger restoration help in different ways. Collector’s Pendant lowers vampiric ability health cost and increases claw damage; Arbiter’s Ring combines a lower ability health cost with restoration and regeneration bonuses.

Compare those effects with the recovery problem you actually have. Lowering the cost of attacks can help conserve blood, but it does not replace an item or feeding opportunity when you need to refill empty segments.
